SPOS - Onboard Weather Advisory System

SPOS

Weather can have a major impact on vessel operations. Too often the result of heavy can be severe damage to the ship, loss of cargo and in some unfortumate cases the loss of lives. Additional expenses accumulate, such as higher fuel consumption, loss of time, missed ETA and higher insurance costs.

SPOS has been designed to minimise operational costs. Instead of providing the master with a predefined route advice, SPOS provides detailed weather information on board, as well as advice and support to ship's staff during the planning and execution of (ocean) passages.

The SPOS system makes optimal use of the masters's expertise and skills combined with Meteo Consult's knowledge of the weather. By eliminating expensive meteorolgists ashore, SPOS gives the master enough information to display and calculate the consequences of the water in his vessel and voyage. In addition, SPOS is a low cost and user-friendly tool and is used by over 1000 vessels wolrdwide.

Typical SPOS session onboard

  • Weather: forecast is received daily in mailbox. SPOS can display and print the weather maps
  • Input: vessel and voyage data are entered or updated
  • Route: calculate the optimum route, or set out alternatives. Weather current or shipping characteristics are taken into account
  • Performance: compare results (e.g. ETA, speed)
  • Voyage: save best track and update each day

SPOS is an integrated weather program for deep-sea vessels crossing the oceans and for short-sea vessels in the coastal waters. The data is presented on a 2.5 degree grid (deep sea) and on 1.0 degree grid (coastal), giving full advantage of optimium route planning.
