Il Trovatore at The Royal Opera House
Saturday 20 January 2007 – Friday 23 February 2007
Introduction and prices
The historical and emotional sweep of Verdi’s Il Trovatore has
made it one of the great operatic favourites. Elijah Moshinsky’s
production sets the story of blazing love, jealousy and revenge
against the political tensions of 19th-century Italy and amid the
epic style of Visconti’s cinema through Dante Ferretti’s grandly
scaled sets. Manrico a rebel leader, is the lover of Leonora, but
Conte di Luna is determined to have her for himself. Driven by
raids and rescues, prisoners and poisons, the story inexorably
races towards its damning final revelations as the secrets of
Azucena unfold around them all to deadly result.
The revival of this spectacular production by The Royal Opera
also provides an evening of notable Opera House firsts. An exciting
newcomer to Covent Garden, Nicola Luisotti, conducts the famous
score that includes the Anvil Chorus and the great aria ‘Di quella
pira’. Royal Opera audiences will also have their first chance to
hear Marcelo Álvarez as the rebel leader, Catherine
Nagelstad as his lover and Anthony Michaels-Moore as the Count,
while Stephanie Blythe performs the portentous gypsy for her very
first time. A familiar story, famous music and a unique cast will
make these performances a feast for the senses.
