La Boheme at The Royal Opera House
Monday 23 October 2006 - Saturday 25 November 2006
Introduction and prices
For a century, the pairing of wonderful melody with great drama
have made Puccini's La bohème one of the most loved of all
operas. Famously, the cold hand of the seamstress Mimì warms
the heart of the poet Rodolfo in the lyrical seduction of the first
act, but their love follows a tragic path through secret and
misunderstood motives towards Mimì's untimely death. Along
the way, the character of 1830s Paris is created through John
Copley's now-classic production and Julia Trevelyan Oman's
authentic designs; both these heighten the colour of Puccini's own
score, with its street urchins, lively café and evocative
portrayal of the changing seasons of one tragic year.
Conductor Philippe Jordan and his singers are familiar to Royal
Opera House audiences. Marcelo Alvarez and Katie Van Kooten, then
Frank Lopardo with Hei-Kyung Hong, are paired as Rodolfo and
Mimì; the on-then-off sparring couple of Marcello and
Musetta are played by William Dazeley and Nuccia Focile. Fine
voices for a richly romantic score, and a story of love and warmth,
tears and tragedy - this combination in live performance has
repeatedly proved itself both potent and irresistible.
