Madama Butterfly at The Royal Opera House
Wednesday 14 February 2007 - Saturday 10 March 2007
Introduction and prices
The radiant arrival of the young Japanese bride Cio-Cio-San for
her wedding is one of the most beautifully evocative passages that
Puccini ever composed; and, when set in the richly romantic sets
and costumes of this production, the effect is glorious. Moshe
Leiser and Patrice Caurier's staging creates a ravishing vision of
the 19th-century European image of Japan, a perfect foil for
Puccini's exotic and ever-popular music.
The tale told by this favourite opera turns from romance, to
romantic longing, to tragedy as the dashing American officer Lt
B.F. Pinkerton deserts his young bride. Although she lives in hope
of that 'one fine day' when he will return, increasing isolation
and his final cruel revelation plunge her into tragic despair; the
maid Suzuki and the American consul Sharpless can only look on,
helpless. It is newcomer Nicola Luisotti who again conducts, and
Liping Zhang returns to the title role. And there will be an
exciting debut to catch when Andrew Richards makes his first
appearance with The Royal Opera as the dashing but unwittingly
dangerous American who turns the promise of young life to
death.
